Frequently Asked Questions
SHOULD I WORRY IF MY 9 MONTH OLD IS NOT YET
WALKING?
No - while some children at
this age may be walking, it is not at all concerning if your child is not yet
doing so. However, if your child is not walking without assistance by 14-15
months of age, notify your health
professional.
IS IT OKAY TO GIVE MY
9 MONTH OLD REGULAR COW’S MILK OR GOAT’S
MILK?
Although some children seem to
tolerate cow’s milk at this age, it is not recommended for regular use as
it can cause microscopic intestinal bleeding and it does not contain iron
necessary to develop red blood cells, both of which can result in anemia.
Goat’s milk has been used in the past as an alternative to cow’s
milk or to infant formulas, but it is not recommended as it is deficient in
vitamins necessary for the proper development of red blood cells resulting in
anemia, and it can easily cause allergic reactions in the infant and
toddler.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD MY BABY
HAVE A BOWEL MOVEMENT?
Some babies may
have several stools per day and some may go several days without a bowel
movement. Both of these scenarios are normal and are acceptable as long as the
baby is not having hard, formed bowel movements or hard pellet-like stools. If
the child has not had a stool in three (3) days, the use of an infant glycerin
suppository (or alternatively, a 30 ml serving of prune juice) may be
helpful.
WHY DO BABIES SAY “DA-DA”
FIRST (OFTEN TO THE DISMAY OF THE
MOTHER)?
It is easier for them to say
the “d” consonant than the “m” consonant - (it is not
because they like their mother any less than their
father).
AT WHAT AGE CAN I CHANGE MY
INFANT’S CAR SEAT TO A FRONT-FACING, MORE UPRIGHT
TYPE?
At 9 kg and 1 year of age - until
then it is recommended that the infant be placed in a rear-facing, moreinclined
car seat in the back seat of the
automobile.
WHEN DOES MY CHILD
RETURN FOR HIS NEXT HEALTH SUPERVISION
VISIT?
At 12 months of age your child
should have his next health supervision visit.
