Frequently Asked Questions
WHEN SHOULD MY DAUGHTER START HAVING HER
PERIODS?
Any time between the ages of
ten to thirteen most females have had their first menstrual cycle. If your
daughter has not started by the age of thirteen, discuss this with your
child’s health professional. The age of menarche (the first menstrual
cycle) depends on many factors and may vary widely from individual to
individual. The earlier the mother started, often the earlier the daughter will
start as well. Athletic females may have delayed cycles and even irregular
cycles. If you have not discussed this important part of development in your
daughter’s life with her, do so
now.
WHAT CAN I DO FOR MY
ACNE?
Acne is a very common problem for
the adolescent and can be a major psychological concern at a time when
self-esteem and self-confidence are already low. The treatment of acne includes
a step-wise approach. Cleansing with a medicated soap at least twice daily is
the first and most important step. Removing excess residual oil from the skin
with medicated astringent pads is next. The application of antiacne topical
preparations containing Benzoyl peroxide in a 5 or 10% concentration after the
first two steps will take care of most mild to moderate cases. If this regimen
is followed closely on a regular basis and the patient is still having problems
with the acne, a visit to the health professional for more advanced care may be
necessary.
WHEN CAN MY SON START
ATHLETIC TRAINING AND WEIGHT
LIFTING?
In 1983, the American Academy
of Pediatrics made a policy statement to the effect that weight- and/or
strength-training should not be begun until puberty . However, several studies
since then have shown that strength training can be safe and beneficial for
youngsters, that it can increase muscle strength, improve motor skills, protect
against injury, increase muscle endurance, and have positive psychological
benefits for the athlete, under proper instruction and guidance by trained
personnel.
HOW AND WHEN SHOULD I
TALK TO MY CHILD ABOUT SEX?
Talking
about the human body and in particular about reproduction with a son or daughter
is a very stressful event in the life of a parent. However, it is your
responsibility to discuss these matters with your adolescent and should be done
at this age, if not sooner. Be honest and factual, using anatomically correct
terms and pictures, if desired. There are many publications which can assist the
parent in this important matter and are available in most book
stores.
WHEN DOES MY CHILD RETURN
FOR HIS NEXT HEALTH SUPERVISION
VISIT?
At 14 years of age your child
should have his next health supervision visit.
