Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT IS HAPPENING TO MY
BODY?
The 14 year old is usually going
through puberty and as such, is experiencing many physical and emotional
changes. Most of these may be completely normal and even expected at this age.
However, discuss any specific concerns or problems you may be having with your
health professional.
MY SON’S
BREASTS ARE ENLARGING, IS THIS
NORMAL?
Along with all the other
effects of sexual hormones on the developing body of the young man, sometimes
breast enlargement will occur. This is a transient phenomenon and will usually
go away with time. It is due to the stimulation of the breast tissue by the
adolescent hormonal surge which even in the male, includes some estrogen. If
this is concerning to the patient or if the breasts are painful or associated
with discharge, a visit to a health professional may be
warranted.
WHAT DO I DO FOR MY
ACNE?
Acne is a very common problem for
the adolescent and can be a major psychological concern at a time when
self-esteem and self-confidence are already low. The treatment of acne includes
a step-wise approach. Cleansing with a medicated soap at least twice daily is
the first and most important step. Removing excess residual oil from the skin
with medicated astringent pads is next. The application of antiacne topical
preparations containing Benzoyl peroxide in a 5 or 10% concentration after the
first two steps will take care of most mild to moderate cases. If this regimen
is followed closely on a regular basis and the patient is still having problems
with acne, a visit to the health professional for more advanced care may be
necessary.
HOW DO I KNOW IF MY CHILD
IS INVOLVED WITH DRUGS?
Every
parent’s nightmare is that their child will get involved with the wrong
crowd and into drugs. Young people at this age are exposed to many temptations
not the least of which is drugs. Depending on the drug in question, any number
of personality or behavioral changes may be noticeable in the adolescent on
drugs. Talk with your child and observe his behaviors closely for any
significant, sudden change. Pay attention to his friends and to the
child’s grades at school.
WHEN DO
I RETURN FOR MY NEXT HEALTH SUPERVISION
VISIT?
